At the end of March we held a story-inception workshop at 100 Story Building, we introduced a large panoramic river timeline to represent the stages of the flood: before, during, and after.
Maribyrnong City Council Ranger Martin gave a hands-on demonstration, using a diorama to show how floods impact vegetation, animals, and the wider ecosystem. He also brought in vegetation and debris from the flood for the children to examine and incorporate into their artwork.
The children shared their personal experiences, as well as broader reflections on community resilience. This was the first session in the flood recovery program aimed at amplifying the voices of young people, and it was inspiring to see their creativity and engagement.
We’ll continue developing the book through a series of workshops incorporating storytelling, play, and art, children and young people will shape a narrative that captures their experiences of resilience. The book will be realised with the help of illustrator Tam Bower, who will bring the participants ideas to life.
