ANDREW McDONALD: The power of WEIRD

In this fun and interactive masterclass, bestselling author Andrew McDonald will share the secrets to creating characters and writing stories that hook readers with the power of WEIRD.
Andrew McDonald is a children’s book author and the writer of the beloved Real Pigeons series, which is illustrated by Ben Wood. Andrew's books have been shortlisted for the Readings Children’s Book Prize, the Australian Book Industry Awards and the YABBA/KOALA/KROC children’s choice book awards. Andrew loves writing stories that make kids laugh, gasp, think and wonder. He also enjoys baking his own bread, which he eats down to the last breadcrumb (sorry pigeons).
Andrew has been a keen mentor to our Editorial Committee for many years of the program, sharing insights about book marketing, teamwork, and creative manifestos. He was also a guest author for Early Harvest 6: Crime and Murder Mystery, contributing a story full of twists, turns, and the mysterious “Merrispoon Fir Allen”.

HEESCO: Collaborative Creativity
All creative pros know: to make great work, you have to work together.
Dive into the world of collaboration - how can you work together with other creative people to make stuff that’s even better than if you did it by yourself? Play awesome games and try out hands-on activities to get to know your collaborators and build your teamwork skills - through art!
Known by the artist name Heesco, Khosnaran Khurelbaatar is a Mongolian-Australian muralist and fine artist. Born in 1979 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Heesco moved to Australia in 1999 before relocating to Melbourne in 2010 and establishing himself as a sought-after mural artist. Heesco’s projects include more than 20 murals in Yarram, VIC (now known as Heesco Town), a mural for World’s 50 Best event in Melbourne; curating a 100m mural for the United Nations in Ulaanbaatar; collaborations with Marvel, Youtube, Puma, Nike, Nikon…and more!
Heesco created a story illustration for the story ‘Desert Blossom’ in 2020’s Early Harvest book, Unboring Exploring, before designing the fantastical cover of 2021’s Tales from Deep Below.

KATE MOON: Light & Colour: making portraits with feeling
Level up your drawing as you explore two key elements of a successful portrait!
In this masterclass, we ask that you bring whatever drawing materials you are most comfortable using: watercolours, a digital tablet, textas, oil paint, charcoal, crayons or good ol’ gray lead pencils. Get ready to unpack how you can use light and colour to conjure up different moods and bring your portraits to life!
Kate Moon is best known as one half of the illustration team that brought Adam Briggs’s ‘Our Home, Our Heartbeat’ to life as an award-winning children’s book. She has worked as a character artist for high profile projects like Sony’s “Spongebob: Sponge Out Of Water” and ABC’s “Figaro Pho”. Kate works across different illustration areas: animation, children’s book covers, editorial illustration and various comic projects. In her spare time she paints and creates artworks for her own enjoyment.
Kate created the fiery cover illustration for 2020’s Early Harvest collection, Unboring Exploring.

HOLLY ADKINS: Creating Cool Comic Characters!
Join comic artist Holly Adkins for a crash course in character creation!
When you make a comic, you have to draw your characters over and over and over…in this masterclass, you’ll get to know an amazing illustrator and learn how she approaches this challenge, then try it out for yourself to build an imaginary person from the ground up.
Holly Adkins is a Sydney illustrator, who specialises in interestingly believable characters in fantastic situations. Influenced by mythology, real life and the grey line in between, Holly Adkins has appeared in a number of anthologies globally, has illustrated for a number of industries and publications, as well as creating her own personal comic, which can be read at further-comic.com
Holly has been involved in every year of the Early Harvest project since the second book! Aside from amazing story and editorial illustrations, she created the editor portraits for Unboring Exploring and the cover of EH6: Crime and Murder Mystery.
