Early Harvest - Designing a Cover

Blog EH tea_workshop2 copy.png

The Early Harvest editors have been through a very vigorous yet very colourful process of selecting a cover illustrator for this year’s Early Harvest publication.

Guided by designer Reg Abos, who designed last year’s spooky book ‘The Sound of the Dark’, Reg took us through the full book design process. From looking through illustrator portfolios, creating a design brief and choosing a font - everything we need to know to help communicate the theme: Adventure.

After much deliberation the young editors finally selected the amazing Melbourne artist Kate Moon! Kate is an illustrator, character designer and 3D artist working across animation and print. You may recognise her work from the children’s book ‘Our Home, Our Heartbeat’.

Here’s a sneak peak of some of her initial design concepts - we can’t wait to show you the final product very very soooooooon!

Early Harvest is a dynamic program for upper-primary students that gives them an in-depth experience of the publishing process. Under the program, we bring together an editorial board of Year 5 and 6 students who publish an annual fiction publication written by their peers.

View and buy all our previous fiction books from the program.
