Case Study: Department of Transport and Planning

Students show off their zines and worksheets at a Quest 2050 workshop at 100 Story Building.

From May to July 2024, 100 Story Building partnered with the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning as part of Engage Victoria. We devised and delivered “Quest 2050” a series of engagement workshops to 517 students from 20 schools across Victoria, including 12 metropolitan and 8 regional schools.

Drawing on our long experience in creating programs that authentically amplify youth voices, these workshops focused on four key pillars:

  • Affordable housing and choice

  • Equity and jobs

  • Thriving and liveable suburbs and towns

  • Sustainable environments

Teachers and students were sent the worksheets in advance to focus their thinking on these themes and capture preliminary ideas.

During the workshops, each participant developed a “Pocket Portal to 2050” zine. The zine encouraged reflection on what they love about their community and envision a future to enhance their quality of life. The zines zoomed forward to 2050, encouraging students to creatively explore future jobs/careers, housing, liveability, and environmental sustainability.

We used new technology to change the way medicine is made to make it as cheap as possible, which resulted in everyone living longer and the life expectancy is now over 130 years.

The trees and plants have come alive. We all have electric vehicles to drive. We put the environment first and now the earth is alive. This is how our neighbourhoods thrive.

The project culminated in a comprehensive report compiling all the students’ contributions.

This report highlights the creative and forward-thinking ideas of young Victorians and provides actionable insights for policymakers and planners.

I’m here in 2050 and my neighbourhood is more green than grey. I see ALL the stars!
