Statement of Solidarity and Support for Black Lives Matter
100 Story Building works towards a future where all children and young people, no matter their background, thrive and prosper to their full potential. There can be no prosperity for all when First Nations peoples of this land must continue to resist violence, dispossession and cultural destruction. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia, and recognise their enduring connection to land, waters and culture. We deeply respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ struggle and determined hope for a better future, and support their calls for Voice, Treaty and Truth-telling.
In solidarity with Black Lives Matter, 100 Story Building commits to actions that make space for First Nations and Black peoples’ stories, particularly those of children and young people, and the work we need to do as non-Indigenous Australians to better support Reconciliation and anti-racism in our community.
What does this mean?
It means that our staff and board commit themselves to learning/unlearning and facing our challenging history, the continued colonisation of First Nations peoples, and the marginalisation of Black people in Australia.
Over the next few weeks, we will seek out and share stories from First Nations peoples and people of colour, because #ownvoices and representation matters. At the end of this learning journey, we will commit to a formal action plan for Reconciliation. We continue to run our programs, as we believe that creativity and sharing stories are more important now than ever. But we can do better.
As a first step to show our commitment to the cause, we have suspended the End of Financial Year campaign that normally takes place at this time each year to raise funds for our creative literacy programs. Instead are reaching out to our supporters to join us in this challenging journey of growth and learning.
