Making of an editor

The applications are in and going by the confident, creative voices in them, we are looking forward to an absolutely cracking Early Harvest editorial board this year!

Early Harvest is a dynamic program for upper-primary students that gives them an in-depth experience of the publishing process. Under the program, we bring together an editorial board of Year 5 and 6 students who publish an annual fiction publication written by their peers.

At the end of Term 2, we had asked the Year 5 and 6s at our six partner schools to apply to join the editorial board.

The answers to the question ‘Tell us about your life in 25 words or less’ best describe the creative, confident and fun spirit of the applicants this year.

‘I was born. Yes I know, amazing. I grew up to be twelve, and am obsessed with all things art. I am utterly and completely ordinary.’

‘I was born with magical powers that allowed me to turn invisible. I use that power to win Hide and Seek every single time.’

‘I went traveling around the world for a year and a half, and when I got back I was passionate about writing and still am.’

‘I am 11 years old. I have a secret job. I work for the FBI! No one knows about my secret job! I am happy!’

‘Usually kids my age look forward to having fun but even though I’m young, I believe the world has to change for the better :)’

Their sense of fun and adventure is supported by a clear understanding of what they think the job of an editor is. We know because we asked them. Here are some of the answers we received.

‘An editor has a great responsibility. They have to review story ideas and decide what will interest the reader. They have to check the facts, spelling, grammar and details and have an eye for details.’

‘Add perspective and new thoughts to make the book better.’

‘An editor’s job is to fix punctuation, change words and overall fix up mistakes in a story.’

‘Creativity

Having fun

Reading

Editing

Having patience’

We can’t wait to meet the final 15 who get selected to join the Early Harvest editorial board for 2020.

Early Harvest is a school program. Registrations for Early Harvest 2021 will open in November.
