A week on the 100th level
Not even a week after exams, and my school wants me to work! So, this past week I completed a work experience placement at 100 Story Building, and I can’t express the amount of fun and joy I had here, heading off to ‘work’ wasn’t that bad after all.
I love storytelling in all forms including art, music, writing or talking, and discovering a place that promotes just that, is what drew me to 100 Story Building. Storytelling has been a big part of communities for thousands of years, from legends to fairytales, movies and tv shows; they have all been vital not just for our entertainment, but to learn life lessons and teach people the importance of togetherness and happiness.
During my placement, I was able to experience how the business operates in developing creativity in children and young people, and I had the opportunity to see how programs such as Story Hubs and After-School Workshops are organised. I received a behind the scenes view of the set up and the delivery of workshops and watched as ideas such as character design, motivation and plot are combined to create a story.
All the children who participated in the workshops I sat in were very creative in designing characters and stories, generating new worlds and creatures from aliens to portals and adventures in space. The way 100 Story Building teaches children is engaging and ensures that young writers use their own ideas and imagination to formulate original pieces.
As you can see on the 100 Story Building Instagram, myself and fellow work experience student Trin, created an Instagram story about our experience working here. We both explored the types of pictures and videos they post on their social media as well as how to write a blog post (which is what you’re reading now!).
My overall favourite part of the week has been working with the staff. All are very welcoming and create a space full of creative freedom. There is always something to do or learn at 100 Story Building.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this post and finding out what it’s been like to hang out on the 100th level for a week!
